Ying Wang studied composition with York Höller, Rebecca Saunders, and Johannes Schöllhorn at the HfMT Cologne. She studied electronic composition with Michael Beil and at IRCAM. Already during her studies in Cologne, she was able to establish herself as a composer who stands for advanced, critically conceived chamber and orchestral music. Her original home in Shanghai and Beijing, as well as her new home in Berlin, form a contrast that is reflected in her works both thematically and musically. In her work, she constantly seeks new interfaces with other media and arts, such as dance, video, digital art, light, visual art, and performance. In her compositions, Ying Wang deals with topics such as environmental pollution, global social grievances, political persecution or human relationships with technology. For her work she has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships. The ensembles and orchestras she has worked with include some of the most renowned musicians in Europe and Asia.

During her residency, Ying Wang will work on a multimedia, music-theatrical piece that interweaves the stories of five women with violin, electric guitar, ensemble, voice, video and electronics. Different musical genres and female perspectives tell the women’s stories about their resistance and transform anger into revolutionary waves. The project aims at an artistic, journalistic, and historical examination of current forms of active resistance from a female perspective in the medium of new music, which is still dominated by male networks.
