4 Nights of Picnic & Silent Film with Live Organ

This summer, Silent Salon goes into its 4th season.

Curated by renowned film historian Cari Beauchamp we will present a summer of comedy featuring the great comediennes of the silent screen. These powerful women dominated the silent screen during the tens and early 1920s and brought millions of moviegoers to theaters every week. As an added attraction, several of the films will feature Los Angeles locations, giving today’s audience a glimpse of what the Southland looked like at the time – prepare yourself for crowds at Santa Monica auto races, great swaths of farmland, dirt roads, and the just built Beverly Hills Hotel.

Saturday, August 27 @ 8:15 p.m.

Show People (1928, 79 min.) stars Marion Davies as a young woman who comes to Hollywood to be a star and of course, hijinks ensue. Directed by King Vidor and co-starring William Haines, this farce turns the lens on Los Angeles and filmmaking in the silent era. Davies was often underrated because her stardom was assumed to have been the result of her relationship with William Randolph Hearst, but her comedic timing and talent shine in Show People.
