Remembering the Exiles: Zemlinsky & Exile Composers

The "Remembering the Exiles" series at Villa Aurora honors the Feuchtwangers and other artists and intellectuals forced into exile by the Nazi regime, many of whom have been forgotten.

The event featured a musical performance of works by Alexander Zemlinsky and other exiled composers, followed by a panel discussion led by James Conlon. The discussion focused on two initiatives dedicated to reviving the works of composers persecuted by the Nazis: Recovered Voices (Los Angeles) and Musica Non Grata (Prague).

This program was a first time collaboration of Villa Aurora with the Los Angeles Opera, Prague Operas, and the Conlon School of Music.

An Evening with Cate Blanchett and Julian Rosefeldt

With the multifaceted Cate Blanchett in the lead role, Manifesto is a tribute to the rich tradition and literary beauty of artists' manifestos, while also questioning the role of artists in a society threatened by populist tendencies.

After the world tour of the art installation and film version of Manifesto, double Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and artist, filmmaker, and Villa Aurora Fellow Julian Rosefeldt have once again collaborated. Following a conversation and Q&A session with the two artists, there was also a private sneak peek of Rosefeldt's new project.

The event marked the first collaboration between Villa Aurora and the local Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica.

Meet The Artists

At our "Meet the Artists" receptions, we introduce our groups of fellows to the American public. Our summer fellows took the opportunity to host a very special open house, offering our guests a unique behind-the-scenes look at Villa Aurora. The house became a stage, and we celebrated the premiere of our very first mural, created by Joram Schön.

The event was supported by the Society of Art Los Angeles, an artist-run collective from Echo Park, Los Angeles.
