News |Call for applications: Thomas Mann Fellowships 2025
The Thomas Mann House has opened its fellowship application process for the year 2025, inviting innovative minds to explore the theme "Across Boundaries."
Application Deadline: February 22, 2024
Berlin, December 13, 2023: The Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles serves as a transatlantic forum for debate, where thought leaders engage with each other and with the host country, the USA, to address fundamental political, social, and cultural questions of the present and future. For the year 2025, fellowships are being offered for stays at the Thomas Mann House on the theme "Across Boundaries":
Across Boundaries
A flourishing democracy depends on a plurality of voices and inclusive cultures of communication. What are the implications for open societies when individuals identify as members of seemingly opposing communities? How can we prevent the alienation of large parts of the population from democratic values and processes? What are creative and interdisciplinary approaches to enhance cultural, social, and digital institutions, structures, or practices for a more accessible and engaging public discourse? Up to which point is it desirable and beneficial to connect and communicate across differences?
The Thomas Mann Fellowship is open to thought leaders, creatives, and outstanding personalities from the fields of culture, politics, media, or economics, as well as from the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, and economics. There are two categories:
- Junior Fellowships are aimed at emerging thought leaders with existing public visibility.
- Senior Fellowships are intended for established personalities and thought leaders with international recognition and broad public visibility.
As a residency of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Thomas Mann House and its interdisciplinary programs are committed to the spirit of Thomas Mann: During his time in the United States, the writer intensively addressed questions regarding the roots of fascism, democratic renewal, freedom, migration, and exile in his literary works, lectures, and essays. Building on this sociopolitical impact, the Thomas Mann House dedicates its fellowship program to the relevant challenges of our time.
