Christina Köhler | Composition
Christina Köhler is a German-Filipino sound and performance artist who mostly works under the artist name Tintin Patrone. In 2011, she completed her studies at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg, where she studied under Haegue Yang, Asmus Tietchens, Isaac Julian, and Matti Braun. Tintin
Patrone explores the connections between sound, art, and other experimental forms of expression. One focus of her creations is on the visual elements of music, the tension between conceptual ideas and physical existence, and how we relate to music, individually and as a society. Her work is partly inspired by club culture. In 2009, Tintin Patrone founded the noise ensemble Krachkisten Orchester and in 2018 the performance collective The Ambassadors of Disappointment in collaboration with the Goethe Center in Guadalajara, Mexico. In 2021, she ran an Asian takeaway called DEUTSCHES REIS, a place for experimental music and food.
During her stay, Christina Köhler wants to create new compositions for the bamboo instruments used in the music of the Musikong Bumbong. These handmade instruments imitate western brass instruments but use a kazoo as a sound generator. Musikong Bumbong was the attempt of a 19th-century revolutionary movement to create a uniquely Filipino sound. This attempt led to the formation of bamboo ensembles that were organized along the lines of marching bands and played music by Filipino composers.
