Leonor Antunes | Artist
- 1972
- born in Lisbon, Portugal
Antunes studied visual arts and sculpture at the University of Lisbon and the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe/Germany. Her works have been exhibited in leading international museums and galleries, including the Kunsthalle Basel/Switzerland and Marc Foxx Gallery/Los Angeles. She has been awarded numerous residency fellowships in Spain, Germany, Portugal and France.
Focusing on modernist architecture as an expression of extreme innovation and formal risk-taking, Antunes extracts forms, patterns and furniture, turning them into isolated objects or duplicates estranged from their original concepts. In Los Angeles, she will investigate the Case Study Houses, commissioned as inexpensive models for mass production in the 1940s to 60s, based on the works of architectural historian and author Esther McCoy.
