Florian Gallenberger began his studies of philosophy, psychology, and Russian in 1991. From 1992 – 1999, he studied at the HFF in Munich.

His graduation film Quiero Ser, a short film about street children in Mexico, won the Student Academy Award in 2000 and an Oscar in 2001. His feature film Shadows of Time, which premiered at the Berlinale in 2005, received numerous awards including the Bayerische Filmpreis for Emerging Talent and best Director of Photography (Jürgen Jürges).

His next feature film John Rabe won the Deutscher Filmpreis for Best Feature Film in Gold in 2009, along with three other prizes (including for lead actor Ulrich Tukur).
