Das Interesse an Bildern und Kamera zog Max Penzel nach Berlin, wo er in der Zeit von 1999 bis 2005 an der DFFB studierte.

Seit 2005 folgte er bei 3 Spielfilmen in unterschiedlichen Positionen Volker Schlöndorff, drehte ein Projekt mit Stipendiat Hannes Stöhr, das in den Kinos lief, und stand regelmäßig bei Andreas Höfer hinter der 2. Kamera.

Max Penzel wurde 2005 mit dem Ballhaus Förderpreis ausgezeichnet und 2007 als 2. Kameramann mit dem bayerischen Filmpreis für die beste Bildgestaltung (1. Kamera Andreas Höfer).
